Now, for whoever holds the Scroll of a Thousand Prayers, a new wish will be granted. A new age is about to dawn.
Raised by monks in the isolated Silent Winds temple, Yumeko has trained all her life to hide her yokai nature. Half kitsune, half human, her skill with illusion is matched only by her penchant for mischief. Until the day her home is burned to the ground, her adoptive family is brutally slain and she is forced to flee for her life with the temple’s greatest treasure—one part of the ancient scroll.
There are many who would claim the dragon’s wish for their own. Kage Tatsumi, a mysterious samurai of the Shadow Clan, is one such hunter, under orders to retrieve the scroll…at any cost. Fate brings Kage and Yumeko together. With a promise to lead him to the scroll, an uneasy alliance is formed, offering Yumeko her best hope for survival. But he seeks what she has hidden away, and her deception could ultimately tear them both apart.
With an army of demons at her heels and the unlikeliest of allies at her side, Yumeko’s secrets are more than a matter of life or death. They are the key to the fate of the world itself.
I enjoyed the book very much. I’m a hoe when it comes to japanese folklore, samurais and other ninjas. I grew up reading manga, and i even learned japanese. (and i realise i can’t even say a whole phrase in japanese right now. Growing up is so overrated sometimes.)
Why did i gave three stars, you might ask ?
Well. The writing was good. The story was good too. But a bit predictible. I saw the ending coming from far, far away, and when it finally came :
I mean. The rest of the book was so good, i just hoped it would have been a bit more original when it came to the trame. Well. Enjoyed it.
I had an issue with Yumeko too. OMG SHE IS SO NAIVE. Like, she thrusts EVERYONE. come on, girl. you are a kitsune. Kitsune are FOXS. Fox don’t give their thrust to anyone. be a bit more foxy for f… sake ! And, no matter what happens to her, she never learn. Not once. She keep thrusting everyone. again. And again. And again. I really have issues with that kind of characters. I mean, you are wrong once, twice… just… do something ! Even if you are only 16.
I loved every page with Tatsumi, on the other hand. His mind is very interesting, and his duality something i really love reading about. And, the other side characters are great too. A bit clichee, but… it’s okay.
I will definitly read the other book of this serie, because i really enjoyed the universe tatsumi and the other side characters. I just hope Yumeko will grow up a bit !
