Reading: February 23 – March 7, 2019.
I had a sister, once… In a world ruled by fierce warrior queens, a grand empire was built upon the backs of Phoenix Riders—legendary heroes who soared through the sky on wings of fire—until a war between two sisters ripped it all apart. I promised her the throne would not come between us. Sixteen years later, Veronyka is a war orphan who dreams of becoming a Phoenix Rider from the stories of old. After a shocking betrayal from her controlling sister, Veronyka strikes out alone to find the Riders—even if that means disguising herself as a boy to join their ranks. But it is a fact of life that one must kill or be killed. Rule or be ruled.Just as Veronyka finally feels like she belongs, her sister turns up and reveals a tangled web of lies between them that will change everything. And meanwhile, the new empire has learned of the Riders’ return and intends to destroy them once and for all.
Sometimes the title of queen is given. Sometimes it must be taken.
This book was not on my “want to read” list until i realised it was going to be the Owlcrate’s book for the February crate. i legit didn’t even knew it existed before i tried to guess the book they were going to send us. (and i didn’t succeeded so i asked my personal Sherlock Holmes to do it. Love ya @littlebird 😀 )(yeah, i’m crap at finding books for crates, and google is definitely not my friend woopsie.)
So, i fell in love with the resume. I mean ? phoenix rider ? badass queens ? yas, please. I started it the day i got it… and put it back two hours later when Veronyka’s sister killed… someone i won’t name here otherwise it would be called a huge spoiler. It was just cruel. I mean. why ? Why Val had to be the one who knew everything and Veronyka just had to follow it blind fully ? I hated Val from the beginning.
But well. I can’t just DNF a book. Even if it became slow, even when someone i love is killed. (after all, that’s why i continued reading Harry Potter after Sirius’s Death.)
So i picked it back. And continued reading. And it became gorgeous. Each line, each page, i just couldn’t stop myself reading. I loved the way Nicky Pau Preto just made Veronyka grow. I really thought the story was beginning when the two sisters went apart, when Val disappeared and Veronyka tried to join the phoenix riders. That part of the story was the part i loved the most. I loved every page after that, and i was really drawn into the book. I’m so glad i didn’t put is aside an never went back to it.
Since it’s a duology, i’m waiting for the second book now, and i really have great expectations for it !
